Celebrity Spotlight: Zach Galifianakis gives an 87 y.o. woman a new opportunity at life

June 25, 2015

Meet Mimi Haist. She is an 87-year-old woman who used to volunteer at the LA Laundromat seen here. She got by only on the tips that were left for her by the patrons of the laundromat.  And Zach Galifianakis was one of those patrons.

He met and befriended her in 1994 when he was still a struggling comic. But with the success of the Hangover movie, Zach’s like changed dramatically and he unfortunately lost touch with Mimi.  That is until two years ago when Zach learned Mimi had become homeless.

After learning of Mimi’s misfortune, Zach found her a one-bedroom apartment which he continues to pay the rent for. He also introduced her to Renee Zellweger, who furnished her apartment and regularly buys her groceries.

Zach has also taken Mim to the last two Hangover premiers, as well as the premier for his own movie: The Campaign. When interviewed, she jokes and says she is often mistaken for his girlfriend.

So the next time we judge a celebrity based on the “facts” we learn through media, consider that we might not actually know them at all. Zach Galifianaki – we applaud you. Thank you for doing what you can with your good fortune to help those that are less fortunate.
